Waikiki Ho‘olaule‘a


ANOTHER BIG weekend awaits, starting tomorrow with the annual Waikiki Ho'olaule'a along Kalakaua Avenue.

Over a quarter of a million people are expected to check out the event, which features 11 stages of live entertainment, food booths, lei stands and a bungee trampoline ride.

Among the entertainers scheduled to perform: Baba B, Keahiwai, Namahana and Yvonne Elliman. And be sure to check out the beer garden at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki -- you just might catch me there knocking a few back. ...

ALSO TAKING PLACE this weekend is the Hawaii Garlic Festival & "Home Grown Products" Show at the Waikiki Shell. From 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, try a variety of garlic-infused dishes offered by restaurants like California Pizza Kitchen, Gyotaku, Kincaid's, Palomino Euro Bistro and The Willows.

Cooking demonstrations by the "Pyro Chefs" of Gilroy, Calif., and local chefs Mark Ellman, Iva Kinimaka and Troy Teruya are also scheduled, and the East Coast Connection, Hawaiian Gods of Destruction and other Island X-Treme Wrestling Federation performers will face off in the "Extreeeme GARlic Challenge."

The Garlic Festival's main stage will also feature live entertainment starting at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday. John Feary, Jennifer Perri, Chant, Go Jimmy Go, Solanna and Reign are among the acts that will perform.

Tickets to the event are $3 in advance, $5 at the gate. Proceeds from this kick-off event for the Great Aloha Run will benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Carole Kai Charities and Catholic Charities Hawaii, among others. ...

CLASSIC ROCK FANS will want to journey to the North Shore on Saturday for "Rockfest 2002," taking place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the North Shore Marketplace entertainment field.

The day-long event is headlined by the Atomic Punks, an early Van Halen tribute band. California groups Rocks (an Aerosmith tribute band) and Moving Pictures (a Rush tribute band) join Southbound and Hawaii's own Slug on stage, as well.

Tickets for "Rockfest 2002" are $17.50 presale, $20 at the door. Parking is free in the lot next to the North Shore Marketplace. Call 637-3074 for info and presale locations. ...
