Playing doubles with
romantic doctor/authorLAST week an item appeared here about Tess Gerritsen, the former medical doctor in Honolulu turned romantic novelist. At the time I figured few folks in Honolulu were aware of her. Then came a note from Dave Heenan's wife, Nery, who revealed that Heenan's latest book, "Double Lives," reviewed in Sunday's Star-Bulletin, contains a big chapter on Tess and her double life as doctor/author. He interviewed the author in Camden, Maine and the Heenans have become good friends with her. Incidentally, the September issue of Forbes Magazine carries a nice review of "Double Lives" by Caspar Weinberger. If interested, Heenan will participate in a book signing Oct., 4 at noon at Bestsellers downtown ...
SPEAKING of double lives, Dorothy Stamp by day is a psychiatric nurse, and by night can frequently be seen acting in productions of The Actor's Group on Keawe Street. She even won a Po'okela Award for her diabolical role in "Oleanna" last year. Now she's going national. Dorothy was the only local actress cast in a national Honda commercial -- the others came in from L.A. -- and it was shot at Kualoa Ranch. It starts running across the country this week ...
KGMBe There
WHO else but longtime KGMB-TV anchorman Bob Sevey could host the television special about the first 50 years of Channel 9, due to air next month. Sevey, who was the town's top-rated newsman when Joe Moore, who now wears that mantle, was doing the sports segment on the news. Sevey flew in from his Olympia, Wa. home, to anchor the report, and before his departure, the station had an aloha party for him at Chai's Island Bistro with thousands of people milling about outside. Of course, it was because the party had to be held on the same night as the down Ho'olaule'a. Many former KGMB alums, all of whom revered Sevey, showed up for the occasion, including such on-air talent as Kirk Matthews with wife Linda Coble, Leslie Wilcox, Elissa Yadao, Matt Levi, Jim Leahey, George "Granny Goose" Groves, Bernie Armstrong, one former Mr. Checkers and even the grand-daddy of them all, Kini Popo, now a publisher but back when KGMB went on the air, the first person to speak and say "Welcome." ...WHEN the Cal-Poly volleyball team showed up to do some carbo loading prior to their match with the UH Wahine squad, the folks at Auntie Pasto's on Beretania were waiting to see if dining there helped. Alas, Cal-Poly lost on successive nights to the local gals ...
Something in the air
THERE'S sure to be a strong fragrance in the air around the Waikiki Shell this weekend, and we're not talking plumeria. On Saturday and Sunday, the "Original Hawaii Garlic Festival" will be held, patterned after the Gilroy Garlic Festival, which drew 100,000 people in three days last year. Two Gilroy chefs, Jon Vickroy and Ken Fry are flying in to help students from the Culinary School of Windward Community College prepare an all garlic menu in "Gourmet Hale" in the middle of the Shell ...
