Hawaii coach June Jones announced this morning that quarterback Jason Whieldon has left the football team due to personal problems.

Whieldon played for starter Tim Chang during short yardage and goal line situations and threw for two touchdowns two weeks ago at BYU.

"We talked over the weekend and he's had some struggles at home and he decided not to come back," Jones said.

Whieldon had missed last week's practices during Hawaii's bye week. Jones said he had a long talk with Whieldon on Thursday and told the quarterback to take a few more days and not rush his decision. Whieldon, who had talked with quarterbacks coach Dan Morrison about the problem for a few weeks, decided to leave the team.

Jones stressed that Whieldon's decision was based on family and had nothing to do with football or playing time. Jones did not completely close the door on Whieldon's return.

Shawn Withy-Allen was Whieldon's road and training camp roommate and got a heads-up on the change but said Whieldon otherwise hid his troubles well. Withy-Allen now takes Whieldon's spot on the depth chart for this week's game against UTEP.

"I would say it's just like anything else," Jones said. "We get an injury, the guy's gone. That's the way football is. You just roll with it, the next guys tees it up, another star is born."
