Free TV time draws over
150 candidates to OleloMore than 150 candidates for political office have taken advantage of the free television air time offered by Olelo Community Television.
Olelo has been running a program entitled "Vote!2002: Candidates In Focus" since Sept. 3. The show will continue until the primary election Saturday.
The program airs on Oceanic Channel 54 and is also available on-demand at www.olelo.org and Oceanic Cable Channel 110.
Lurline McGregor, president and chief executive officer at Olelo, said the program offers candidates a chance to get their message out to the public for free. She said the 150 candidates are the most to participate in the 10 years Olelo has been offering the election-year program.
The program will begin its general election edition in October.
Hirono gets electrical
Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono has picked up the endorsement of two of the three International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers unions in Hawaii.The IBEW unions, Local 1357, representing 2,000 Verizon employees; and Local 1260, representing Hawaiian Electric, local television stations, Servco, American Machinery and Oceanic Cable, announced they would support Hirono. No endorsement yet has been announced by IBEW Local 1186, although Hirono said she has met with the newly elected business agent, Gerald Yu.
Hirono also won support from the International Union of Painters, which represents 2,500 members.
Laborers support Andy
Democratic gubernatorial candidate D.G. "Andy" Anderson garnered the support of the Hawaii Laborers' Union.Anderson announced that he has been endorsed by the Labors' International Union, headed by Benjamin Saguibo. The union represents 3,855 general contracting, landscaping, maintenance and health care workers.

Chamber OKs Lingle
Republican gubernatorial candidate Linda Lingle on Friday picked up the endorsement from the Maui Chamber of Commerce."Maui's business community feels she can make state government more accountable, and our experience working with Linda Lingle tells us she will support the business community, bring transparency to government, and strengthen our state's economy," said Lynne Woods, Maui Chamber president.
