Waikiki Saturday Night
A TRADITION BEGINS: Alan Yamamoto, left, Chriss Heyd and Brickwood Galuteria took a break during the first annual "Kulia I Na Hoku" Concert at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel on Saturday. Heyd and Galuteria produced the 2-1/2 hour celebration of Hawaiian music and dance. Melveen Leed, gorgeous in gray, brought down the house with her comments about men and an amazing impression of Palani Vaughan.
ACROSS THE LAWN: Koa Siu, left, hula dancer Aloha Keko'olani and Leon Siu (Koa's dad, and one-half of Leon & Malia) took an extended break during their evening gig at the Royal's Original Mai Tai Bar so that their music wouldn't clash with the concert across the lawn. Heyd, Galuteria, Marlene Sai and Imaikalani Young stopped in for drinks afterward. Leon & Malia are getting play on 99.5 "The Breeze."
LATER, NEXT DOOR: Veteran dance instructor Christopher Bayot, right, and his girlfriend, Miru, visited John Valentine at Ladies Night at the Hanohano Room. Joining Jennifer Lehua Barber on vocals that night were Lisa Taylor and Yvette. The three shared a repertoire that stretched from Tracy Chapman to Pink. Bayot says he and Miru are anticipating the Hawaii Star Ball dance competitions later this month.
