UCLA opens tournament with big win over USF

UCLA broke a scoreless tie with two quick goals in the second half by Iris Mora en route to a 4-1 victory over San Francisco in the opening match of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Classic at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park Stadium last night.

The Mexican National Team player scored at 51:30 and 58:34 for the fifth-ranked Bruins (3-1).

Caty Harris countered with a goal for USF (2-1-1) at 66:34, before UCLA tacked on two more goals.

Katie Rivera scored 78:31 and Mora got her hat trick with a goal at 81:56.

The Dons play Hawaii (1-2-1) tonight at 7.

Chaminade posts win over Division 1 foe

The Division II Chaminade water polo team defeated UC Davis, the 20th-ranked team in Division I, 14-8 yesterday at Redlands, Calif.

Eric Billington and Petar Samac had five goals apiece for Chaminade, which improved to 3-0.

It is the second upset of a nationally ranked D-I team by a local D-II team this season. Brigham Young-Hawaii beat No.19 Air Force.

On Thursday, Chaminade drubbed Chapman 19-8 behind six goals by Milos Matijevic. Samac added four more.

Kauai grad Roberts win collegiate honor

Kauai High graduate Heather Roberts, a sophomore at William Woods University in Missouri, has been named the NAIA Region V Setter of the Week.

The Owls are 5-0 behind Roberts, including a 3-2 upset over No. 14 Olivet Nazarene last weekend.

The 5-foot-7 setter was last year's Freshman of the Year in the American Midwest Conference.
