Iolani took
big step vs. Edison

The Iolani Raiders realize their 34-20 victory over Edison (Calif.) last Friday was just another step in their preparation for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu football season.

But what a remarkable step it was.

Led by Raynold Stowers' four-touchdown performance and an aggressive defense, Iolani rallied from a 20-6 halftime deficit to upset the Chargers, whose only loss last season was to Long Beach Poly in the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Division I title game.

True, it was Edison's first game of the year, and the Chargers are replacing a busload of starters. But a win over a team of Edison's stature still carries considerable value for the Raider program.

"We talked about how this game against Edison would be a great measure of how good we can be and I think it was a good confidence boost," Iolani coach Wendell Look said.

But as much as they enjoyed the victory, the Raiders know it won't win them any points in their ILH campaign, which begins Saturday against Damien.

Look dispelled any notions that his ejection early in the third quarter was a motivational ploy. He wouldn't elaborate on what he said to draw two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties on Iolani's first drive of the second half, but said he apologized to the team afterward.

"It's something that shouldn't have happened," Look said. "I felt I let the team down."

First serve for OIA: The Oahu Interscholastic Association volleyball season begins tomorrow with matches at five OIA East schools. The OIA West begins play Saturday.

Defending girls champion Kahuku faces McKinley tomorrow and boys champion Pearl City takes on Waialua on Saturday. The OIA regular season runs through Oct. 25, with the championships to be decided on Nov. 7.

ILH pool party: The ILH boys water polo season begins Friday. Kamehameha plays at Punahou and Iolani hosts Pac-Five. The Division II matches start at 5 p.m., and the Division I matches follow at 6:15.

Champion Bulldogs reunite: Members of Waialua's 1952 OIA championship football team will be recognized at halftime of the Bulldogs' homecoming game against Kalani on Saturday.

It will be the first time the players have gathered since they went on a run of four OIA titles under coach Toshi Nakasone.

Ranking watch: If the rankings hold, the HHSAA Football Classic will feature three of the nation's top 10 high school football teams.

St. Louis jumped from No. 13 to No. 10 in this week's Student Sports Fab 50 National Football Rankings. De La Salle continues to hold the top spot, while Long Beach Poly moved from 7 to 4.

Kahuku also made an appearance in the West region rankings, checking in at No. 15.

The Tony Poll, which takes the average of several national polls, rates De La Salle first, Poly fourth and Kahuku ninth. St. Louis is ranked 22nd.

Corrections: The Web address to order tickets for the HHSAA/ First Hawaiian Bank Football Classic is www.ticketplushawaii.com. An incorrect Web site was listed in Sunday's paper. Tickets are also available at all Ticket Plus outlets or by calling (808) 526-4400 or (877) 750-4400.

Also, KUMU 1500-AM will be the only radio station broadcasting the game. Two stations were listed in Sunday's paper.
