Popular Maui Marathon
scheduled for Sept 22


The 32nd annual Maui Marathon will be held Sunday, Sept. 22.

The marathon is the oldest continuously held running event in Hawaii and one of the oldest marathons in the country.

Last year's event had 2,715 entrants (1,455 females) from 44 states and 19 countries -- a rapid growth from 1994, when there were just 330 runners.

The Maui Tacos 5K Fun Run/Walk, will be held Sept 21 at 8 a.m.

The entry fee is $25 and applications are now available at all Maui Tacos locations, Footlocker, Hawaii Race Magazine, at www.mauimarathon.com or by calling (808) 871-6441.

Seasiders stopped by Gauchos

Vanja Kalabic dropped four goals on No. 9 UC Santa Barbara last night, but the Brigham Young-Hawaii water polo team still lost 12-7 in California last night.

The Seasiders held the Gauchos scoreless until 2:33 left in the first period but surrendered three quick goals and never recovered.

Jordan Brink scored two goals and Alexsander Stankovic had eight saves for the Seasiders, who dropped to 1-3. UC Santa Barbara improved to 1-1.

BYUH will take on UC San Diego today at 3 p.m. Hawaii time.

Paddlers sweep at Catalina

Hui Nalu Canoe Club won the women's event and Team Hinano the men's at last weekend's 38th Catalina Crossing outrigger canoe race in California.

On Saturday, Hui Nalu finished the 27-mile race from Newport to Avalon in a record 4 hours, 6 minutes and 20 seconds. Offshore of California, which set the record of 4:14:55 in 2000, was second in 4:07:40 with Outrigger Canoe Club of Waikiki third in 4:08:20.

Members of the winning women's crew were Julie Aio, Kelly Allen, Lorey Bode, Maile Chong, Catherine Fuller, Tammy Kaneaiakala, Cathy Kukea, Kaui Pelekane and Nikki Queyrel.

Team Hinano, made up of mostly paddlers from Kai Opua in Kailua-Kona, finshed the 31-mile men's course on Sunday in 4:05:39 to lead a Hawaii sweep of the top three places. In second was defending champion Team New Zealand/Hawaii in 4:06:05 with Outrigger third in 4:08:02.

Other men's crews from Hawaii to finish in the top 15 were Hui Nalu (6th, 4:18:34), Kailua (11th, 4:24:30) and Hawaiian (12th, 4:33:10).

The men's winning crew was made up of Bruce Ayau, Kafoa Halalatu, Ikaika Hauanio, Nate Hendricks, Scott Jones, Thibert Lussiaa, Nui Youderian, Mark Cluney and Jim Foti.

The event drew 39 women's crews, 24 coed crews and 59 men's crews.

Next up on the Hawaii racing schedule is the Henry Ayau Men's International Race on Sunday from Maunalua Bay to Ko Olina. Next up for the women is the Sept. 29 Na Wahine O Ke Kai Molokai Channel race.

The next race for women is the Hawaii Modular Space Na Wahine O Ke Kai.
