Romantic thrillers
and a baby too

IT took a few years, but in a way Honolulu magazine is responsible for a New York Times best-selling author getting into writing for a living. It was back in the early '80s that Dr. Tess Gerritsen, a Stanford grad who'd received her M.D. from the University of California, San Francisco, and following her internal medicine residency was practicing medicine in Honolulu. While on maternity leave, the doctor began to write fiction and submitted a short story to Honolulu's fiction writing contest. Surprise -- she won first place and a few years later her first novel, "After Midnight," was published. Tess could knock off these romantic thrillers at will and her first book was quickly followed by eight others. In 1993 she wrote a screenplay, "Adrift," which aired as a CBS Movie of the Week starring Kate Jackson in 1993. The now retired doctor entered the N.Y. Her parents, Mike & Paulie Schick flew over to see her in the role that Elliman first created on record for Andrew Lloyd Webber ...

The "Make-a-Wish" foundation of North Texas is underwriting the trip to see FFH, one of Zacarrie's favorite groups ...

SO what was City Prosecutor Peter Carlisle doing loading the famous "red couch" from the KHON-TV morning show into a truck the other morning? Seems he was a guest on the show and was told the couch was being retired and donated to charity making way for a new set on the show. Carlisle quickly volunteered to help with the move ...

Swab jockeys

THE Battleship Missouri is looking a bit spiffier than usual this week thanks to the Aloha United Way's "Day of Caring" last week. Some 65 job hopefuls polished brass and swept and mopped the decks and 18 Young Brothers employees sandpapered paint off the rails, helping with renovations. Though Tiki's Grill & Bar hasn't opened yet, owners Bill Tobin, Greg Montgomery and Fred DeAngelo also pitched in ...
