The 60-year-old Wallace was expected to be released from University Medical Center yesterday. However, a CT scan Sunday showed a small amount of fluid in the area of the surgery between the skull and brain; the tube that drains the excess fluid was to remain in his head until today.
Wallace's condition continues to improve and he is expected to be released from the hospital tomorrow. He is tentatively scheduled to return to Hawaii this Sunday.
"There were no residual injuries to the brain," hospital spokesman Rick Plummer said. "He would be able to function normally. There are no long-term implications from the surgery."
Wallace has been hospitalized since last Thursday morning when he went to the UMC emergency room complaining of severe headaches and dizziness. He was en route to Friday's Hawaii-Brigham Young game in Provo, Utah; Wallace was then to continue on to New York and Florida to visit with recruits.
Yesterday was the first day of the fall contact period for men's basketball recruiting and only two coaches from the same institution are allowed out to make campus visits. UH assistant coach Jackson Wheeler left for his planned recruiting trip. However, it is unsure who will replace Wallace as the second Rainbow coach or when.
The contact period runs through Oct. 5.
