Ravens’ Kemoeatu
a starter

Even though the Baltimore Ravens lost to Carolina yesterday, their feared defense hasn't lost a step.

Ray Lewis led the way with 10 tackles and the Ravens' defensive unit held the Panthers to 10 points in a three-point loss.

Former Kahuku standout Maake Kemoeatu, a rookie defensive end with the Ravens, started his first game as a pro and made one tackle.

Another Kahuku alumnus, Itula Mili, caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Matt Hasselbeck in Seattle's 31-17 loss to Oakland.

Mili, a six-year pro, finished with three receptions for 23 yards.

Denver's Jason Elam, a 10-year veteran and Hawaii alumnus, kicked field goals of 41, 32 and 34 yards and added two extra points in the Broncos' 23-16 victory over St. Louis.

Ashley Lelie, Hawaii's record-breaking receiver, debuted with the Broncos. He played sparingly and didn't have a pass thrown his way.

Running back James Fenderson, who played for Mililani in high school and Hawaii in college, backed up Deuce McAllister in New Orleans' 26-20 victory over Tampa Bay, but didn't get any carries.

Five offensive linemen with Hawaii ties started games yesterday: centers Kevin Mawae (dad born and raised in 50th state) of the New York Jets, Olin Kreutz (St. Louis School) of Chicago and Dominic Raiola (St. Louis) of Detroit and guards Chris Naeole (Kahuku) of Jacksonville and rookie Toniu Fonoti (Kahuku) of San Diego.

Several others with Hawaii ties on NFL rosters didn't play yesterday, including Atlanta guard Kynan Forney (Hawaii), Arizona center Steven Grace (Kamehameha) and Arizona defensive tackle Mario Fatafehi (Farrington).

Three others, defensive end Kimo von Oelhoffen (Molokai) and running back Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala (St. Louis) of the Pittsburgh Steelers and tackle Adrian Klemm (Hawaii) of the New England Patriots play tonight.

San Francisco linebacker Jeff Ulbrich (Hawaii), Washington wide receiver Cliff Russell (Campbell), Atlanta defensive tackle Jerry Togiai (Kahuku) and San Diego defensive tackle Doug Sims (Hawaii) are on injured reserve.
