Irons flattened by
wild-card entrant


Hawaii's Andy Irons was eliminated from the Billabong Boost Mobile Pro at San Clemente, Calif., yesterday.

Irons, the current ASP ratings leader, won the award for highest arial but lost to wild-card entrant Shane Bescher on points. He has lost in the third round of his past three tournaments.

"There's got to be a winner and a loser and I lost," Irons said. "He's a local and did the job. of course I wish I could have made it, but that's the way it goes."

Shane Dorian also lost, falling to Damien Hobgood 20.5-15.25. Sunny Garcia was Hawaii's only surfer to advance, beating Fabio Gouveia 16.25-10.25.

Sea Warriors lose to ranked team

The No. 18 Hawaii Pacific volleyball team lost to No. 17 Cal State Los Angeles Saturday night in the James Castle gym at St. Andrew's Priory.

HPU Middle blocker Susy Garbelotti recorded her fifth consecutive double-double with 21 kills and 10 digs, but couldn't avert the 30-17, 14-30, 30-19, 21-30, 11-15 loss.

Sensley finds a home at L.A. City College

Former Kalaheo High standout Julian Sensley, a basketball nomad for the past year, has found a home.

The 6-foot-8 forward enrolled at Los Angeles City College as a freshman. The Cubs reached the state finals last season.

This will be sixth school for Sensley following his 2001 graduation from St. Thomas More prep school in Connecticut.

Victorino gives Suns East Division crown

Shane Victorino (St. Anthony) singled home the tying run with two outs in the seventh inning and the Jacksonville (Fla.) Suns went on to beat the Carolina Mudcats 7-2 and win the Southern League's East Division best-of-five playoff series.

Victorino, a center fielder in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, was 3-for-5 with a run scored and two runs batted in.
