Council bill would shut
surf schools in Kihei

WAILUKU >> The Maui County Council has approved a bill to shut down commercial surf schools at Cove Park in Kihei.

Councilwoman Jo Anne Johnson, chairwoman of the Parks Committee, said it is just an interim measure until a more substantive law can be developed.

The bill attempts to deal with the growing conflicts between Maui residents and the commercial operators who use popular beach parks for surfing lessons.

The bill bans commercial users from Cove Park and the southern end of Kalama Park, and from Launiupoko Wayside Park in West Maui, on weekends and holidays.

It also would not allow any commercial operator to renew a permit for activities at Cove Park and the southern end of Kalama Park.
