Candidates’ forum is set
for Wednesday in Manoa

The Manoa Neighborhood Board sponsors a candidates' forum Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Noelani Elementary School.

Marilyn Bornhorst, the former city councilwoman for the district, will moderate the meeting.

Candidates for lieutenant governor, Council and state house are expected to attend.

Cayetano weighs in

Gov. Ben Cayetano is criticizing D.G. "Andy" Anderson, saying the Democratic candidate for governor is uninformed about the state budget.

Disturbed that Anderson repeatedly charges that the state is "flat broke and on the verge of bankruptcy," Cayetano complains that Anderson is "out of touch with what is occurring across the nation.

"The fact is, Hawaii continues to be fiscally sound," Cayetano said.

"People understand that times have been tough for everyone in our country. I think our people are much more in touch with what is happening than some politicians give them credit for," Cayetano said.

Cayetano earlier had criticized plans detailed by Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ed Case and Republican candidate Linda Lingle.

Anderson responded, saying that the state is "very much on the edge of bankruptcy.

"If we aren't broke, I would say pay the teachers the $12 million we owe them now ... restore the budget cuts to the College of Education. ... We are indeed in dire financial needs," Anderson said.
