Mother gets 1 year;
tot starved to death

Associated Press

HILO >> A mother whose infant daughter starved to death has been sentenced to one year in jail and placed on 10 years' probation.

Saraswati Mulder, 24, also known as Saraswati Gopi Lacasse, had been charged with murder, but pleaded guilty in July to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Mulder's daughter, Manjai Mulder, was 10 weeks old when she died Oct. 27, 1999. At the time she weighed 6 pounds, more than 1.5 pounds less than her birth weight.

Mulder said her daughter had been ill and that she relied on alternative treatments. Circuit Judge Greg Nakamura said Mulder, mother of two other children, can begin serving her sentence after giving birth to another child in two weeks.

Police said Miller apparently was injured fatally Wednesday night when his dirt bike ran off Makuu Drive near 31st Avenue in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision.

His body was found the next morning and taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said speed and alcohol may have been factors in the accident.
