Kalaeloa-Makakilo

Brian Kanno

Election 2002

Democrat

Age: 41 Job: State senator Past: Former congressional aide; Parents and Children Together

What qualifies you to be a state senator?

I have a solid record of accomplishments for our community: securing the funding to build Kapolei High School and Kapolei Middle School, funding a 24-hour emergency response vehicle for our community, and funding to start Royal Kunia Elementary School. I am committed to building a future for our young people.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

Building UH-West Oahu and K-through-12 school facilities to meet the needs of our rapidly growing region. Convincing legislators that creating educational opportunities for Leeward youth is critical to developing our region as the secondary urban center for Oahu. Explore increased funding for construction, such as a $1 billion CIP budget.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

Incentives for emerging industries that best utilize Hawaii's natural resources including its people: education, biotech, diversified agriculture, health care, renewable energy, high tech and film/entertainment industries. Explore creative approaches to reversing the brain drain ...

Gerald K. Nakata

Republican

Age: 36 Job: Registered nurse Past: Graduated Hawaii Community College with high honors

What qualifies you to be a state senator?

I'm a U.S. citizen who's a Hawaii resident. I live in my district. I'm of eligible age. I'm not running to get a job. I'm an ordinary person wanting to represent the ordinary people in the district that we live in.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

Better infrastructure (better roads, better quality schools, etc.). Improving infrastructure to Hawaii's fastest growing area should be a state priority, and all of this hinges on first finding out where our tax dollars are being spent and holding elected officials accountable.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

Decrease the excessive taxes endured by our citizens by eliminating the taxes on food, medical services, and rent. Diversify our economy and better educate our workforce. Continue to assist our tourist industry which brings in outside money to our economy. Make Hawaii a more attractive place for businesses to invest.

Did not respond: John DeSoto, Democrat (19th district)
