Election 2002

[ STATE HOUSE ]

42

Waipahu-Ewa

Rida T.R. Cabanilla

Election 2002

Democrat

Age: 49 Job: Importer of apparel/food Past: U.S. Army officer; active with the Filipino community

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

My desire to serve, my ability to make a difference, my God-given personal qualities such as honesty, innovation, and diligence, my education, the various jobs I have done and all the people that have touched my life have prepared for the job I am seeking for.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

Traffic is the most uncomfortable issue in my district. There has been irresponsible development in Ewa Beach. Homes were built without adequate infrastructure and even with this existing problem; new homes are being built everyday. Homebuyers are not being adequately informed about these problems such as traffic and overcrowding of schools. ...

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

Business diversification. We should invite more tourist-related business in Hawaii. For example, a business surgical center for elective surgeries primarily for plastic surgery. People from out of state or from other countries come here for their plastic surgeries then go home when they are well. ...

Alfonso Jimenez

Republican

Age: 39 Job: Physician Past: Vice president of medical staff, St. Francis Medical Center-West

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

My private family practice clinic has served the community for years, therefore, I have an intimate understanding of local issues. I've been involved in health care politics by serving as vice president of the medical staff at St. Francis-West and knew that more could be accomplished through local government.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

Expanding Fort Weaver Road must be the number one priority for this district. Another legislative session should not end without reaching a resolution to make the expansion a reality. The expansion must happen, and, must be done in a way that doesn't make residents prisoners of construction work.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

The state should become an example of responsible budgeting and spending. Our people need to see opportunity instead of burdens imposed by oppressive taxes, regulation and waste. We also need to unleash the power of our small business people as well. This will lead to economic diversification.

Tulsi Gabbard Tamayo

Democrat

Age: 21 Job: Martial arts instructor Past: State legislative aide; Alliance for Traditional Marriage

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

Working with my father, Mike Gabbard, and others to pass a constitutional amendment to protect traditional marriage, I learned that real leaders are willing to make personal sacrifices for the common good. I will bring that attitude of public service to the Legislature.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

Traffic problems and education. We need to fast-track improvements to our infrastructure to reduce traffic congestion. As to education, kids have a hard time seeing how what they're learning in school applies to their life. We need to show them how "education" will get them where they want to go.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

Reduce the red tape and bureaucracy of state government so small business and entrepreneurs can flourish. This will stimulate diversification in our economy. We also need to reduce the cost of government by being more efficient and streamlining everything government does.

Gerald Vidal

Democrat

Age: 58 Job: Not given Past: Awards: National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

My record and experience serving in the United States Marine Corps for our "FREEDOM," and at home and in our community as an Hawaii Air National Guardsman. Most importantly your "VOTE" so on Sept. 21, 2002, please vote for Gerald Vidal.

What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?

Cars speeding, theft and property damage are almost happening daily. I would recommend more police persons to our area. To fix our major traffic by only exiting right and underpass or overpass left.

What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?

Now is the time to use our sun resource by giving 100 percent tax credit for solar heaters and power. State and county supported and assisted agribusiness. Support production companies and syndication of published materials such as books, movies, etc.
