What qualifies you to be a state representative?
I have lived in or near the district I will represent for all of my life. I know the district well, and am willing to listen to my constituents.
What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?
Jobs. Improve our business climate (see below).
What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?
Lower taxes and fees for businesses. Reduce the cost of government in our daily lives; most notably, eliminating the excise tax on food, medicine and housing rent.
Mark G. Horsley
RepublicanAge: 37 Job: Member of NavComm Marketing Past: Bachelor's, University of Phoenix What qualifies you to be a state representative?
My years of experience selling attractions and in business in Hawaii have given me a great deal of insight into our leading industry, tourism. I will bring this experience to the legislature to address the state's role in developing and promoting this vital industry thorough the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?
Crime in Makiki, as in many areas of Oahu, is a serious problem. Because there are so many condominiums in the area, people are constantly moving in and out. Strengthening community watch programs by encouraging interaction among residents would make it more difficult to commit crimes such as burglary
What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?
More must be done to stimulate the growth of "clean industries", such as some high tech and health industries. Tax credits and deferrals should be used to encourage more investment in the state. Meanwhile, the burden of GE taxes on food and medicine should be eliminated.
Brian Schatz
DemocratAge: 30 Job: Executive director, Helping Hands Hawaii Past: State representative; board, Makiki Library
What qualifies you to be a state representative?
My background in business and community service gives me a unique and broad perspective on the issues that face our community. My four years of experience have helped me to become effective in the legislature.
What is the most pressing issue facing your district and what would you do about it?
The disrepair of our schools is clearly one of the most urgent community needs. I will continue to push for increased repair and maintenance of our public school classrooms. This year, we were successful in appropriating enough money for 1900 newly refurbished classrooms.
What is the best way to stimulate the state's economy?
We must continue to support the diversification of the economy, while helping the tourism industry to rebound from the shocks of 9-11. Also, supporting the University of Hawaii will reap economic benefits in the long term.
