Kamehameha went 20-0 last season en route to winning the ILH and state championships. League and state runner-up Iolani opens its season at home at 1:30 p.m. Saturday against Damien.
The ILH girls begin play Tuesday.
The ILH varsity season will be broken into two rounds. The first round is a round robin including all 12 teams. The top five finishers qualify for the second round. If the first- and second-round champions are different there will be a playoff for the overall league title.
The OIA volleyball season starts Sept. 12.
Dogfight didn't happen: Kamehameha football coach Kanani Souza believes last week's game against Waimea "would have been a dogfight" had the Menehunes not made two bad punt snaps early in the game.
The mistakes led to two short touchdown drives in the Warriors' 42-7 preseason victory.
Kamehameha kept the momentum the rest of the way on the finely tuned passing of 6-foot-1, 170-pound senior quarterback Caleb Spencer.
After beating the Menehunes -- the reigning Kauai Interscholastic Federation champions, who have a 2-3 record in the state tournament the past three years -- Souza was asked if he thought a second ILH team should qualify for future state tournaments.
"We don't have any control over that," said Souza, whose team placed second to St. Louis in the ILH and missed out on states the past three years. "I tell the boys to focus on the things we can control."
Waimea coach Jon Kobayashi was highly impressed with the Kamehameha offense.
"They picked us apart," Kobayashi said.
"It's a new year and we have a long way to go," he added when asked about the team's chances of making it back to the state tournament for a fourth straight year.
More than one Kamehameha fan in the stands at Kunuiakea Stadium remarked about the Menehunes' 6-1, 210-pound junior running back Jordon Dizon, who rushed for 96 yards on 18 carries.
Record for Donahoo: Baldwin quarterback Michael Donahoo set a Maui Interscholastic League record with his 378-yard passing performance against St. Anthony last week.
The senior completed 23 of 40 passes, five going for touchdowns, in the Bears' 34-13 victory.
Junior varsity games start at 5 p.m. Varsity games follow, unless otherwise noted. Prep football schedule
