Seasiders leap from
unranked to Top 10


The Brigham Young-Hawaii volleyball team jumped from unranked to No. 7 in the AVCA Coaches poll yesterday.

The Seasiders were 3-0 at Florida last week, sweeping Florida Tech, Mercy and defending national champion and preseason No. 1 Barry.

Barry dropped to sixth and West Texas A&M jumped to the top spot from third.

The Seasiders celebrated their ranking by beating up on St. Martin's 30-8, 30-14, 30-20 last night.

BYUH coach Wilfred Navalta found playing time for each player on his roster, getting 14 kills from Chun Yi Lin and nine from Ashley Moeai. The Seasiders served six aces during the match.

Outside hitter Yu Chuan Weng led the Seasiders with 17 kills just hours after being named the AVCA Player of the Week for leading the Seasiders to the unbeaten record. Weng averaged 5.89 kills, 3.33 digs and hit .436.

She was also selected the Barry Invitational Tournament MVP and the Pacific West Player of the Week.

Hawaii Pacific remained 18th and Hawaii-Hilo received 26 points but were shut out of the Top 25.

The Seasiders next travel to Bellingham, Wash., to play in the Western Washington Invitational beginning Friday. The Seasiders will play Seattle Pacific at noon Hawaii time.

Landis awarded Trainer of the Year

Michelle Landis has been named trainer of the year in the Frontier League, an independent baseball league in the Midwest.

Landis, the Dubois County Dragons trainer the past two summers, is a staff trainer at the University of Hawaii.

Kai named WAC Player of the Week

Hawaii freshman Natasha Kai was named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for her performance in the Ohana Hotels and Resorts No Kai Oi Soccer Tournament last week.

Kai, who played her prep soccer at Kahuku, scored three goals in two games and unleashed 13 shots against Wyoming to set a school record.

San Jose State's Erin Lavey was named the WAC Defensive Player of the Week.

Irons brothers to meet at Boost Mobile Pro

Brothers Andy and Bruce Irons are scheduled to surf in the same heat in the first round of the Boost Mobile Pro at San Clemente, Calif., tomorrow.

They will share a heat with Richard Lovett of Australia. Andy Irons is the ratings leader.

Other Hawaii surfers competing are Kalani Robb, Shane Dorian and Sunny Garcia, all in separate heats.
