Tastes of the sea

Along with free inflatable rides, kids' games, contests, a Coast Guard demonstration and art exhibit, these seafood cooking demonstrations are planned:

11 a.m.: Hong Kong Harbour View, Cinderella Deep-Fried Prawns
11:30 a.m.: Kapono's, Shrimp Scampi Ibay
Noon: Don Ho's Island Grill, Seared Coconut Ahi
12:30 p.m.: Big Island Steak House, Crunchy Coconut Calamari

Admission is free. Call 566-2337.

Dueling chefs

The second episode of the kitchen battle "Paradise Chef Duel" will air at 7 p.m. Saturday on KGMB/CBS.

Putting up their dukes are D.K. Kodama of Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar and Russell Siu of 3660 on the Rise and Kakaako Kitchen.

The show was taped at Restaurant Row last month, with the chefs given a last-minute secret ingredient, around which they had to create three dishes in one hour. Judges selected a winner.

Emcee was David Rosengarten of the Food Network's "In Food Today," assisted by local broadcast personality Alice Inoue.

Politics of the diet

For the politically active vegetarian, the refusal to eat meat is not just a dietary choice, it is a social statement, and one that deserves advocacy.

Richard McLellan discusses that "vegetarian imperative for human society" before the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii in a talk, "The Vegetarian Agenda: Politics and Success."

McLellan was a doctor at an inner city trauma center in California until six years ago when he took up political advocacy. A vegan, he directs an animal advocacy political action committee in California.

The Vegetarian Society meets at 7 p.m. next Wednesday at the Ala Wai Golf Course club house. The event is free, open to the public and includes food samples. Call 944-VEGI.
