Partied hearty
on Labor Day

LONG WEEKENDS are always crazy -- especially when they fall at the end of a month. With parties like "Flipside Thursdays" at Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar and the Sisters in Sound at Auntie Pasto's in the lineup along other Labor Day celebrations, there were a lot of choices last weekend for people seeking a good time.

At Restaurant Row Sunday night, Sansei joined the Row Bar and Ocean Club in presenting the "Bud Block Labor Day Celebration." Among local acts performing on multiple stages: Fiji, Mana'o Company, Ten Feet, Sudden Rush, Milo Shade and Go Jimmy Go. Giveaways included a Marc Resorts getaway and a $500 gift certificate to Hawaiian Heritage Jewelry. ...

EVER SINCE my first visit to Nick's Fishmarket about a decade ago, I've enjoyed the mellow vibe and elegant decor of the Waikiki restaurant. In celebration of Nick's 32nd anniversary, a complete dinner is being offered for -- yep, you guessed it -- $32.

The food on this fixed menu isn't just what the chef has lying around, either. Nick's starts you off with an appetizer sampler featuring oysters Rockefeller, calamari fritti, blackened sashimi and shrimp scampi. Soup and salad are also served before you get to business with the main course: an entrée sampler with opakapaka, ahi steak and rack of lamb. Add cherries jubilee for dessert, and you're guaranteed to experience a high-class kanak attack. ...

IF YOU SPENT too much money last weekend partying around town, save some cash and help out a good cause by checking out 104-3 XME's "Power Jam" Saturday at the parking lot across from the Ward Entertainment Complex. It starts at 2 p.m., and a portion of the proceeds from the $10 tickets sold will go to Aloha United Way. Those who show up will also get a $5 VIP Power Card to use at Dave & Buster's.

More than just a concert, the 104-3 XME "Power Jam" will also have food booths, a beer garden, inflatables for the keiki and a street course skateboarding demonstration by the Town and Country Skateboard Riders. Local girl Yasmeen Sulieman will join national recording artists Jene and Sean Paul on stage, along with local acts Believe, the Opihi Pickers, Darrell Labrado, Oshen and the Chief Ragga. Call 296-1043 for info. ...
