Fujimoto leads Kaimuki
to win over Moanalua
in opener

Kaimuki's Darin Fujimoto got himself to the right places at the right times last night to lead the Bulldogs to a 17-7 win over Moanalua in the season opener for both teams at Kaiser Stadium.

The 5-foot-8, 155-pound senior carried five times for 35 yards on the game's decisive drive (which gave Kaimuki a 10-7 lead with eight minutes to play) and added the clinching score on a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown as a closing gesture.

Moanalua (0-1) grabbed its only lead at 7-3 on the first play of the fourth quarter on a 24-yard run by Wallace Coleman. But behind the running of Fujimoto and sophomore Semi Qoro, the Bulldogs moved 80 yards in nine plays to regain the lead.

Fujimoto finished with 62 yards on nine carries, while Qoro managed 80 yards on nine carries. The Bulldogs used the pass sparingly as quarterback Sheldon Sarcedo attempted just six passes, completing two for 18 yards.

Conversely, Moanalua quarterback Jaimie Rego connected on 9 of 19 passes for 181 yards. On a night marred my miscues and penalties, however, the Menehune were hard pressed to put up points, although they crossed Kaimuki's 30-yard-line six times.

Hawkins gained 60 yards on 11 carries in the first half, but was held to minus-7 yards on only three carries after intermission.

MIL

Maui 18, King Kekaulike 14: The Sabers held off a late rally by Na Alii to notch a win last night at War Memorial Stadium.

Maui used a stiff defense to take a 12-0 lead at halftime.

King Kekaulike had just 32 yards in total offense in the first half. Dane Patao scored both of Maui's first half touchdowns, scoring on runs of 8 and 31 yards.

NONLEAGUE

Punahou 21, Kealakehe 14: Reyn Wicklund broke through the middle of the ine and rumbled for 20 yards to give Punahou a 21-6 late against Kealakehe.

The Waveriders struck back with a 21-yard touchdown catch and run for the extra point to narrow the gap to seven with 4:34 left. Their defense stuffed Punahou on the next series, but the offense stalled when quarterback Michael Kaniho fumbled four yards short of a first down on fourth down with a minute left.

Kapolei 44, Waialua 6: John Delarama led a Hurricane ground game that earned 228 yards to run over Waialua.

Delarama finished with 131 yards and two touchdowns on only 11 carries and 10 teammates made up the difference.

Kamehameha 21, Kohala 14: T.J. Kuahine rished for 108 yards on 19 carries and scored two touchdowns to give Kamehameha a win over Kohala.

Kuahine's running put the Warriors up 15-0 before Kohala's Kaipo Matthey took his turn dominating on the ground.
