Bonga bumped to second
Hawaii's Bonga Perkins, who was leading the ratings following his win at the previous event in France, finished runner-up for the third time in an Oxbow world longboard championship. He lost to Colin McPhillips, who also took his spot atop the ASP money list.
Despite some great rides, Perkins was left requiring a combination of scores worth 11.16 points against McPhillips and ultimately returned to the beach with more than a minute remaining.
"Going into the final I felt pretty good," Perkins said. "After the first few waves I started catching an edge and I guess I froze up when I needed to shine. You win some; you lose some. It sucks, but what can you do?"
McPhillips matched the record of three world and Oxbow titles set by Hawaii's Rusty Keaulana.
Duane DeSoto of Hawaii -- who finished the season ninth tied with Hawaii's Kekoa Uemura -- took the best maneuver and floater categories.
