Deaths Elsewhere

Janusz Bardach, a plastic surgeon who improved techniques for treating cleft lip and cleft palate and who wrote an acclaimed account of his life in Soviet labor camps in the early 1940s, died on Aug. 16 in Iowa City, his home. He was 83.

Bardach, a native of Ukraine who trained in Moscow after World War II, practiced plastic surgery in Poland and headed an early program in plastic surgery there.

He came to the United States in 1972, and the next year became chairman of the division of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Bardach developed what colleagues came to call the Bardach palatoplasty, a surgical procedure for patients with congenital clefts of the palate, a condition in which the palate is separated into halves.

Bardach's gulag experiences are recounted in "Man Is Wolf to Man: Surviving the Gulag" (University of California Press, 1998), which he wrote with Kathleen Gleeson.

Dave Dalby, a center who helped the Oakland Raiders win three Super Bowl titles, was killed in California on Friday when the van he was driving hit a tree. He was 51.

Dalby was pronounced dead at San Clemente Hospital, where he was taken after the crash, said Lt. Phil Johnson of the Orange County sheriff's office.

Dalby played for the Raiders in Los Angeles and Oakland from 1972-85, during which they won NFL titles in 1977, '81 and '84. He was nominated to the NFL Hall of Fame last year but was not elected.

Kay Gardner, whose last musical work with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra memorialized the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, died of a heart attack Wednesday in Maine. She was in her early 60s.

On hearing of her death, symphony officials scheduled Gardner's work, "Lament for Thousands," for the orchestra's season-opening concert Oct. 13 at the Maine Center for the Arts in Orono.

Gardner was a pianist, flutist and conductor who performed in 46 states and several countries.
