Waikiki Roughwater Swim set for Monday

Hawaii's John Flanagan won't try for a three-peat Monday at the 33rd Waikiki Roughwater Swim off Waikiki.

The two-time defending champion has semi-retired and isn't one of the 762 swimmers entered in the 2.384-mile event beginning at 9 a.m. The race starts off San Souci Beach through the Kapua Channel and finishes at Duke Kahanamoku Beach next to the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Among the local swimmers expected to challenge for the title are high schoolers Noe Sakamoto, who finished third last year, and Hong Zhe Sun, and former winner Rick Heltzel.

As of yesterday, defending women's champion Trudee Hutchinson of Australia had not entered.

Late entries of $25 each will be accepted Sunday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the beach end of Paoa Place, between the Hilton and Ft. DeRussy. Late entries of $50 may be accepted on race day. For more information, the Web site is www.WaikikiRoughwaterSwim.com.
