Box jellyfish expected
to invade this weekend

Star-Bulletin staff

Box jellyfish are expected at some Oahu shores for the Labor Day weekend.

The city Ocean Safety Division issued a warning yesterday for an influx of the tentacled invertebrates, which are expected to arrive beginning tomorrow.

Commonly affected areas include Ala Moana Beach Park, Waikiki Beach, Hanauma Bay, Pokai Bay and Makaha Surfing Beach, according to a news release.

Lifeguards will post warning signs when jellyfish are spotted on the beaches. Lifeguard stations are equipped to treat the stings.

Beachgoers stung by box jellyfish should flush the area with lots of white vinegar. Anyone with breathing difficulty, muscle cramps or spasms, or persistent pain should seek immediate medical attention.
