In 1997, senior safety Eddie Klaneski was a bright spot for Hawaii, which went 3-9 and 1-7 in the WAC.

Team MVP Klaneski led the Rainbows in tackles (128) for the second year in a row and was named all-conference.

The Rainbows played the season in memory of punter Shannon Smith, who drowned while rescuing coach Fred vonAppen's son, Cody, from a tidepool on Kauai. The football team's locker room is named after Smith.

Today, Klaneski lives in San Jose, Calif., where he does counseling work at area high schools. He played for the Fresno Frenzy arena football team last season.
