San Francisco 49ers starting linebacker Jeff Ulbrich will be out 3-6 weeks after hyperextending his right knee.

"He won't miss too much action," coach Steve Mariucci said yesterday. "I think we're lucky it wasn't a season-ender."

Ulbrich, a Hawaii alumnus, was injured during the 49ers' 17-10 exhibition loss to Oakland on Saturday night.

Ulbrich, a third-year pro, started 14 games for the 49ers last season, finishing second on the team with 92 tackles.

The 49ers open the regular season on Sept. 5 against the New York Giants.

In other news involving players with Hawaii ties, Jacksonville released tight end Tevita Ofahengaue, a Kahuku alum, yesterday.
