into quartersHawaii's Bonga Perkins defeated Brazil's Olimpio Batista yesterday to advance to the quarterfinals in the Oxbow World Longboard Championships at Cabo San Lucas in Mexico.
Perkins, the Association of Surfing Professionals World Longboard Tour ratings leader, won the event in 1996.
"Two pretty high scoring waves off the top. Not so much the bigger waves, but they turned out to be good, so I'll take it," said Perkins. "Everybody is surfing well, and there's only eight guys left. You've got the best of the best shooting it out."
Hawaii's Chris Vandervoort, Dino Miranda, Rusty Keaulana and Duane DeSoto were eliminated yesterday.
Lambert, LeGrande take third in Chicago
Punahou graduates Mike Lambert and Lee LeGrande lost to Eduardo Bacil and Frederico Souza to finish third at the Chicago Open beach volleyball tournament yesterday. They'll share $6,900.Eric Fonoimoana and Dax Holdren beat Bacil-Souza to take first and $17,400.
Although his team was ousted in the quarterfinals, Sean Scott, also of Punahou, put up the third most blocks in the tournament with 19. Only Souza (38) and Mike Whitmarsh (20) had more.
New Vulcans beat old: At Hilo, Ann Haggerty put down 18 kills to help Hawaii-Hilo beat its alumnae 30-28, 30-21, 28-30, 30-25 yesterday.
Pirates beat Firecats for af2 championship
The Peoria Pirates scored 29 unanswered points in the second half to beat the Florida Firecats 65-47 for the arenafootball2 title at the Peoria Civic Center Friday night.Peoria's Cornell Craig was the game MVP with three touchdown catches, while Lincoln Dupree returned two kickoffs for touchdowns.
The Pirates (15-5) came to Honolulu for a 64-50 victory over the Hawaiian Islanders on June 8.
"I was worried about Florida (12-8) coming into the game. They were bigger than us, stronger than us and faster than us, but they didn't play as hard as us," said Pirates coach Bruce Cowdrey.
