A Hawaii state charter school has opened its new school year under a new name -- the Myron B. Thompson Academy. Charter school

The school is named in honor of the late Kamehameha Schools trustee and a co-founder of Alu Like Inc. and Papa Ola Lokahi Inc.,
The Hawaii E-Charter is a virtual high school that provides standards-based instruction on the Internet 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The school, begun last year, has 111 students statewide.
School principal Diana Oshiro said Hawaii E-Charter is changing its name to recognize Thompson's contributions to the community in education, health and culture.
"His vision of Malama Hawaii ensuring that our island home is a place where the people, land and sea are cared for and communities are healthy and safe, is an inspiration to us all and is our compass star."
Thompson, who was also a former president of the Polynesian Voyaging Society, died last December of cancer at the age of 77.
