7 Council candidates
get Realtors’ endorsement

Seven candidates for Honolulu City Council have been endorsed by the Honolulu Board of Realtors.

Endorsed were: Donovan Dela Cruz, District 2 (Mililani Mauka to Kaneohe); Don Bremner, District 3 (Kaneohe to Waimanalo); Charles Djou, District 4 (Hawaii Kai to Ala Moana); Ann Kobayashi, District 5 (Palolo to Manoa); Romy Cachola, District 7 (Kalihi to Foster Village); Gary Okino, District 8 (Halawa to Pearl City); and Nestor Garcia, District 9 (Makakilo to Mililani).

All candidates filing nomination papers were invited to participate in the endorsement process. Candidates were asked to answer a questionnaire and participate in an in-depth interview process. The board also considered the candidates' records on issues critical to its 3,600 members.

Mike Stott, chairman of the organization's City Affairs Committee, said endorsements were not made in District 1 (Waianae Coast to Ewa) or District 6 (Downtown to Kalihi) "either due to a lack of response from the candidates in the district or the fact that some candidate's visions for the future do not coincide" with the board's.

Ihara on the issues

Sen. Les Ihara Jr. (D, Kapahulu) has been named to the board of the National Issues Forum Institute, a nonprofit organization that encourages public deliberation on major issues.

Ihara will be attending two board meetings per year until his term ends in May 2005. He has brought National Issues Forums on gambling and campaign finance reform to Hawaii.

Candidates on hand

The Democratic Party's Oahu County Committee is holding a candidate's forum at Farrington High School cafeteria, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

On hand will be Democratic candidates running for governor as well for the state House and Senate from Alewa Heights, Aliamanu, Kalihi Valley, Kapalama, Moanalua, Moanalua Valley, Salt Lake and Tripler.

LG hopefuls at forum

The Oahu Council of Hawaiian Civic Clubs will sponsor a forum tomorrow from 6 to 9 p.m. at the state Capitol auditorium to hear from the candidates for lieutenant governor.

"Our first forum involving candidates for governor was very successful," Council President Jalna Keala said. "We hope to encourage the same sharp focus on issues concerning native Hawaiian recognition, rights and entitlements to the candidates for lieutenant governor at this event."

Democrats Clayton Hee, Donna Ikeda and Matt Matsunaga and Republicans James Aiona and Dalton Tanonaka have confirmed their participation, the organization said.

Hirono drops ad firm

Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono's campaign for governor has dropped its media firm, Ostrander-Chu, according to Robert Toyofuku, Hirono's campaign manager.

Toyofuku said the media agency had prepared two sets of television commercials for the campaign. The campaign and Ostrander-Chu "mutually agreed" to end the contract, Toyofuku said. Future ads will be prepared by the Hirono staff, he said.

The ad agency had originally started the campaign working for Rep. Ed Case's Democratic campaign for governor when Hirono was running for mayor. When Hirono switched to the governor's race, Ostrander-Chu moved to the Hirono campaign.
