The University of Hawaii-Manoa Biographical Research Center is presenting the readings and discussion about "Ruth Ke'elikolani: Hawaiian Ali'i."
Princess Ruth, "a formidable presence in 19th-century Hawaii," refused to speak English, to convert to Christianity or to leave the Hawaiian Islands. She inherited and managed vast land holdings throughout the islands which were later bequeathed to Bernice Pauahi Bishop and form the bulk of properties now administered by Kamehameha Schools.
Guest speakers will include Rubellite Kawena Johnson, UH-Manoa emeritus professor of Hawaiian language; Paul Nahoa Lucas, Kamehameha Schools; Puakea Nogelmeier, UH-Manoa assistant professor of Hawaiian language; Kalena Silva, UH-Hilo director of Hawaiian studies, and Momi Kamahele, Leeward Community College assistant professor of Hawaiian studies.
The event, third in a series entitled "Biography Hawaii Five Lives," is co-sponsored by the Judiciary History Center and supported by the Hawaii Council for Humanities.
