7th-graders need shots before starting school

Families are reminded that seventh-graders must report to school the first day with a yellow card showing they've had legally required immunizations.

All students entering seventh-grade must show they've had three shots for hepatitis B, two for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) and one or two for chickenpox (varicella), the state Health Department points out.

Notices have been sent to parents whose children aren't up to date to inform them about the requirements so no seventh-grader is sent home the first day of school, the DOH said.

The student must have a yellow immunization card signed or stamped by a doctor indicating all required vaccinations were completed. A documented history of chickenpox disease may be substituted for that shot if signed by a doctor.

An appointment slip from a doctor indicating the student is in the process of completing the immunizations also will be acceptable.

Families who aren't insured or who don't have a doctor may locate an immunization clinic by calling Ask Aloha United Way, 275-2000.

For more information, see the DOH Web site at www.VaxToSchool.com or call the Hawaii Immunization program, 586-8323. Neighbor islanders may call 1-800-933-4832 toll-free.

The funds will go toward rehabilitating a drug treatment program facility, planning and design funds for a new youth center, the construction of a homeless shelter medical clinic, the expansion of a senior center and the purchase of emergency off-road vehicles.

Lifeguards save man using CPR at Sandy's

Sandy Beach lifeguards resuscitated a 39-year-old man after he was thrown into the sand by a wave and held under water about half a minute, a water safety official said.

The Pearl Harbor military officer was body boarding with three other officers at Sandy's in 2- to 4-foot surf when lifeguards saw the man floating on the shoreline shortly after 12:15 p.m. and brought him out of the water.
