While everyone else in the valley was looking for a snake, Waipahu's slippery running back Andrew Hale was slithering through Moanalua last night as the Marauders routed the Menehunes 45-13 at Moanalua High School.

Hale, an honorable mention Star-Bulletin all-state pick last year, hauled in three touchdown passes and rushed for two more scores. The 5-foot-7 170-pounder finished the game with 13 carries for 131 yards and four receptions for 46 yards.

"Andrew's always tough," said Moanalua coach Jose Guevara. "Last year we had problems with him too, he's a real good, strong runner."

According to Waipahu first-year coach Sean Saturnio, Hale is only one of several special players who will star for Waipahu this season.

"We have so many skilled guys, it just turned out to be Andy's night," Saturnio said. "Travis Atulevao and Bryson Carvalho will also be big for us this year."

Unveiling a much improved passing attack, Carvalho demonstrated why the Marauders will take to the air much more this season. Carvalho completed 10 of 16 passes for 126 yards and four touchdowns.

"We can't win in the OIA Red being one-dimensional," Saturnio said. "Passing is something we worked on a lot in the summer."

Waipahu dominated all phases. Defensively, senior linebacker Rustin Saole notched 13 tackles, including a 27-yard sack of Moanalua's Jaime Rego.

The secondary, led by Francis Godinet, shut down the Menehune passing attack and did not allow a reception for positive yardage until 2:34 left in the third quarter. On special teams, Waipahu blocked four punts, a field goal and an extra-point try.
