Sanoe Lake is member
of musical family

This being a weekend when Olympic champion swimmer and surfing king Duke Kahanamoku is being honored with his postage stamp, I thought it would be a good time to check out the new surfing film "Blue Crush." A friend who surfs did not like the film. That's putting it mildly. He said Duke must be turning over in his grave about it. But after seeing the film, I think Duke would have enjoyed the shots of the awesome North Shore waves, particularly at the Pipeline. Star Kate Bosworth works hard to portray a local surfer who wants to win a Pipeline surfing contest but is blindsided for a short time by a fling with a visiting NFL quarterback. The romantic angle is weak. But I got kicks out of the fun the four surfing wahine had. One of the women, local surfer Sanoe Lake, displayed talent in her big role. She also wrote and sang a song for the film. Besides being swept away by the waves, I found the surfing "competition" exciting and also enjoyed seeing longtime friends Kimo Kahoano and the late James Grant Benton in small roles ...
All in the Lake family ...
Sanoe is the granddaughter of Tommy Lake, a member of the Kahauanu Lake Trio. Her mother is Tommy's daughter Laola Lake. "I had fun watching the movie," Tommy said. "That's how Sanoe is in real life," he said, referring to her role. "I took her surfing as a small girl." Sanoe's uncle is noted singer-composer-musician Kahauanu. Whenever K is involved in a project, whether with a trio or a big-time production, it will be of utmost quality. The performers will be impeccably groomed and costumed, the music and story line will be superior, the voices pure and melodious and the Hawaiiana will be authentic. K's latest project is a CD, "Na Mele 'Auhau" or Songs of Tribute, on Hula Records featuring the Kahauanu Lake Singers. The 12 songs are all in Hawaiian and K either wrote the music or the lyrics or both on almost all of them. K and Tommy join the singers -- Walter and Luana Kawaiaea, Vernamae Perkins and Arthur Akina -- on this gem. "It's good for the halau," K said. Actually, all who love Hawaiian music should have this labor of love ...

Na Wahine, behind Tiare Paty's four goals, routed the Divas, 7-0, in the Wahine Challenge polo match Sunday at Waimanalo, avenging last year's loss. Tiare was named Most Valuable Player. Her grandfather is former polo player Bill Paty. Others on the winning team, each getting one goal, were: Sarah Agnew-Miller, Paula Beamer and Dori Weymouth. Food and champagne were provided for the crowd after the match. The MJ Michaels Band performed. Prosperity Corner and Beachcomber Realty sponsored ...

Art lovers turned out to support the Academy of Arts excellent Showcase gourmet food and wine fund-raiser at the 75-year-old Academy Sunday eve. An art sale was part of the project. The fund-raiser brought in more than $60,000 for the Academy's art education programs. Music was by the Lew Maddox Trio and Greg and Junko MacDonald on steel drums ...
