From eyes of a child

Bust out those cameras and rush over to Grandma's or Grandpa's house. Only a few days remain to submit photos for a "Celebrating Grandparents" exhibition at the Hawaii Children's Discovery Center.

Sept. 29 will be Grandparents' Day at the center, and to celebrate the relationship between the young and young at heart, the center is inviting local keiki to submit photos of themselves and a grandparent, with a short essay of why their grandparent is special to them.

Monday is the deadline for entries to the contest sponsored by Fuji Photo Film Hawaii. Three winners, from a random drawing of all entries, will receive a Fuji camera and a Grandparents membership to the center.

The center is in the Kakaako Waterfront Park. Regular admission is $8 for adults and $6.75 for ages 2 to 17. For more information, call 524-KIDS (5437).

'Poet of Punchbowl'

The words of Manuel Jesus Coito will spring to life at a forum taking place from 10 a.m. to noon tomorrow in Room 111, Building 27, of Honolulu Community College.

What? You don't know who Coito is?

Known as the "Poet of Punchbowl" in 19th-century Hawaii, his work is being presented by the college, Hawaii Heritage Center, Hawaii Council on Portuguese Heritage and Portuguese Genealogical Society.

Coito arrived here from Portugal in 1886 and was a self-taught poet who used traditional Portuguese poetry forms to meditate on Hawaii's beauty and society. His words will be discussed by University of Hawaii professors, sung by Portuguese musicians and shown off at informational panels.

The event is free. Parking will be free on campus. For more information, call 521-2749.

'Musica' at La Pietra

A new benefit event at La Pietra will give classical music aficionados an outdoor venue to enjoy the Honolulu Symphony when the orchestra presents "Musica de Italia at Villa La Pietra" on Sept. 8, featuring Stuart Chafetz as conductor and Vicky Gorman, soprano.

The Symphony will play light Italian classics including "Musetta's Waltz" by Puccini, Verdi's "La Forza del Destino" and Rossini's "Gallup" from "William Tell."

The public is invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets and enjoy an evening under the stars on La Pietra's Great Lawn. La Pietra-Hawaii School for Girls, at 2933 Poni Moi Road, is the former Dillingham estate well known on the social circuit in earlier years.

The event is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., with music starting at 6:30 p.m. Valet service is available for on-site parking.

Tickets are $45 each, which includes Starbucks coffee and dessert. Other beverages will be available for purchase. Tables can be reserved for 10 or more people. Call 922-2744 or 924-7515 for reservations.
