Wahine volleyball squad
to host team from RussiaThe Hawaii Wahine volleyball team will play an exhibition match against a team from Russia on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
UH will take on Samorodok, which competes in the Russia High League.
Tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and $4 for students.
Samorodok is also scheduled to play Brigham Young-Hawaii, Hawaii Pacific and Chaminade during its visit to the islands.
Hawaii's regular season begins Aug. 30 against Ohio State in the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic.
UH is ranked as high as No. 2 in the national polls.
Meanwhile, the Rainbow Wahine have secured a verbal commitment from Castle senior Juliana Sanders to walk on in 2003. The 6-foot-2 middle blocker attended a Wahine camp a few weeks ago and caught the attention of UH coaches. Sanders will sign a letter of intent in November.
"I decided to go to UH because the program is really awesome," Sanders said. "I want to have a good education and I want to have a good standing in volleyball."
Sanders joins Kanoe Kamana'o, the current state player of the year, Alicia Arnott of La Pietra-Hawaii School for Girls and Kari Gregory of Las Vegas who have already announced their intent to sign with Hawaii.
Sand & Surf Biathlon slated for Sept. 22
The seventh annual Sand & Surf Biathlon ocean swim and run is set for Sept. 22 at Kailua Beach Park.The race -- also open to entries in swim only and run only -- is a one-mile swim and five-mile run along Kailua Beach. The competition is open to all age groups with winners crowned as elite overall finishers or by age and male/female individual divisions and mixed teams.
The biathlon is run by Hawaii Sports Institute to raise funds for various nonprofit organizations. Entry forms are available at several sports or fitness businesses.

Thorpe and Wadkins added to Turtle Bay list
Jim Thorpe and Bobby Wadkins will participate in the Turtle Bay Championship which runs from Sept. 30 to Oct. 6.They join defending champion Hale Irwin, Bob Gilder, Dana Quigley and Allen Doyle at the $1.5 million Senior PGATour tournament.
