Drive raising funds for kids’ health care

Canisters bearing a Hawaii Medical Service Association logo are on display in about 200 Oahu stores and restaurants to collect donations for health services to needy and homeless kids.

HMSA is sponsoring the Waikiki Health Center's Back to School Canister Drive with $5,000 to help provide school physicals and immunizations for children.

Services will be offered at the health center's clinics in Waikiki and Haleiwa.

It is estimated that 1,000 school-age children on the island will receive physicals and other health services at those clinics this year.

Many families cannot afford to pay for school physicals, yet they are required for students entering school for the first time and again in the seventh grade.

"This year, with the new chickenpox requirement for all incoming child-care, preschool, kindergartners and seventh-grade students, there will be more families than ever facing this obstacle," said the Rev. Frank Chong, Waikiki Health Center executive director.

Measles, Mumps Rubella (MMR) and Hepatitis B vaccinations also are required for preschool and kindergartners.

Waikiki Health Center's campaign is supported by such merchants as Safeway, Times Supermarket and KFC Hawaii.

Donations also can be mailed to the Waikiki Health Center, 277 Ohua Ave., Honolulu, HI 96815.

Hawaii 3R's, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to "Repair, Remodel and Restore" public schools, celebrated its first anniversary by sprucing up Pearl Harbor Kai Elementary School.

Professional painters and 250 volunteers cleaned and painted the exterior of all the buildings, walkways and railings.

The Aug. 10 celebration also featured an award ceremony with U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Inouye, U.S. Pacific Commander-in-Chief Adm. Thomas B. Fargo and state Department of Education Superintendent Pat Hamamoto as guest speakers.

The renovations were funded with a $70,000 grant from Hawaii 3R's, with more than $220,000 in contributions from elsewhere.

One of the largest contributors to this project has been the Painting and Decorating Contractors Association of Hawaii, which donated more than $7,500 toward the cost of professional painters.

Donations and volunteers came from the 15th Air Base Wing, Hickam AFB; America's Promise; Associate Students of Hawaii Pacific University; Camp Smith, USCINPAC; Girl Scouts Troop 43; Hawaii National Guard; Hawaii Carpenters Union; Pacific Resource Partnership; Hawaii National Guard's Youth Challenge; Naval Medical Clinic at Pearl Harbor; and Parent Teachers Association.

Volunteers also included teachers, custodians and Marines.

Other key contributors included Aloha Airlines (drinks), AT&T, Audex (sound system), Blaine Fergerstrom (Web master), Campbell Estate, Honolulu Sunset Rotary Club, Hawaii Community Foundation, HECO (food), Jonathan Louie (photographer) and Zippy's (food).

Hawaii 3R's, an initiative of Inouye, awards grants to public schools that match the grants with private contributions and/or volunteers.

Police charge 2 men in threats and assaults

Hilo police charged two Puna men yesterday with terroristic threatening, assault and robbery in connection with separate incidents on the Big Island.

Police said they arrested Steven Willis, 18, Friday at Wainaku Lookout after two Virginia tourists and their Hawaii hosts said they found him trying to break into their rental car.

They reported that Willis also threatened them.

While investigating the attempted break-in, police learned that Willis and Justin Rabang, 18, are suspects in an assault and robbery case that occurred on July 29 in Wailoa State Park.

Police said a 51-year-old man was severely beaten and suffered a fractured shoulder and ribs when two men robbed him.

Police also learned Willis is a suspect in the assault of a homeless man on Kinoole Street in July.

Willis was charged in connection with all three cases. He was charged with one count of robbery, two counts of assault, five counts of terroristic threatening and one count of attempted unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.

Rabang was charged with one count of robbery in connection with the robbery and beating of the 51-year-old man in Wailoa.

Detectives said Willis and Rabang may have been involved in other assaults in Hilo.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Jason Cortez at 961-2379 or the police nonemergency number at 935-3311.

2 teens arrested after tourists are carjacked

Hilo police arrested an 18-year-old man and a teenage boy who allegedly stole two cars, led police on a chase from Kohala to Kona to Hilo and carjacked a tourist couple.

Police said the case began Saturday when two males stole a blue 1991 Honda sedan parked at the Hale Nani Correctional Center in Hilo.

Yesterday, the suspects drove the Honda to South Kohala, where they crashed through several gates at the Mauna Lani Resort in an attempt to steal another vehicle, police said.

Police pursued the vehicle on Queen Kaahumanu Highway toward Kailua-Kona.

As the suspects tried to double back toward Kohala along Hawaii Belt Road, officers gave up the chase because of the dangers posed by the winding roadway.

Police said the suspects turned onto Saddle Road and carjacked a German couple who were in a red Kia at Mauna Kea State Park.

Police said the two forced the couple, a 23-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man, to drive them to Hilo. Police stopped the car just outside Hilo in the Kaumana City area and arrested the suspects, they said.

Police said they recovered numerous items from inside the car that are also believed to be stolen.

Anyone with information on the stolen items is asked to call Detective Greg Esteban at 961-2384 or the police nonemergency number at 935-3311.
