Sea Warriors No. 18
in preseason poll

The Hawaii Pacific volleyball team is ranked 18th in the AVCADivision II Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll.

The Sea Warriors, who won the national championships in 1998 and 2000, have been ranked in each of the past four preseason coaches polls.

Barry topped the poll at No. 1, followed by South DakotaState, West Texas A&M, Tampa and Truman.

HPU -- which finished 19-5 last season -- ranks third in the Pacific region, behind Cal State Bernadino (No. 7 overall) and UCSan Diego (No. 10).

Brigham Young-Hawaii just missed out on the top 25, with 66 points received -- eight fewer than No. 25 Northern Colorado.

But BYUH was one of only four schools to receive a first-place vote (with one). Barry garnered 31 first-plate votes.

Hawaii Pacific opens the season Aug. 30 with matches against Northwood (Mich.) and East Texas Baptist at the Hawaiian Style Classic. The annual tournament is hosted by Hawaii-Hilo.
