Leonard is the likely
qualifier for PGA
Grand Slam of Golf

Despite his dismal fourth round in yesterday's PGA Championship, Justin Leonard is the likely fourth and final qualifier for the Nov. 26-27 PGA Grand Slam of Golf on Kauai.

Tiger Woods and Ernie Els qualified earlier this year by winning the Masters and British Open, and Rich Beem qualified yesterday by winning the PGA Championship.

Woods' victory in the U.S. Open opened a spot for an alternate, and Leonard finished on top of the alternate points standings.

By finishing tied for fourth yesterday, Leonard vaulted past Nick Price and into the top spot in the alternate standing, but an official announcement of Leonard as the final qualifier has not been made yet.

Only former major winners are eligible for the alternate list, and rankings are based on performances in this year's majors.

Leonard held a three-stroke lead going into yesterday's final round of the PGA Championship, but he shot a 77 to finish six strokes behind Beem.

Woods, who finished one shot behind Beem yesterday, will be participating in his sixth straight PGA Grand Slam of Golf at the Poipu Bay Resort Golf Course. He's won the tournament four straight times after his first appearance in '97 when he placed second behind Els.

Leonard also played in the 1997 PGA Grand Slam of Golf, but finished fourth behind Woods, Els and Davis Love III.

Hawaii reaches Legion regional championship

Harrison Kuroda pitched a complete game and Jeffrey Mizokawa smacked a home run to lead Hawaii to a 9-7 win over Arizona in the American Legion West Region tournament at Las Vegas, Nev., yesterday.

Mizokawa was perfect in the game, going 2-for-2 with three walks. Kevin Whalen, Jonathan Hee and Ryan Leong also paired hits.

The win put Hawaii in the title game against Nevada today at 1 p.m. Hawaii time. The winner of that game will represent the region at the American Legion World Series at Danville, Va., beginning Friday.

Nevada beat Hawaii 20-13 Saturday.

Minor gets win in Xterra triathlon

Wendy Minor of Honolulu won the 55-59 age group of the Xterra West Championship at Half Moon Bay, Calif., yesterday with a time of 4:07:09.

Melanie McQuaid of Canada won the overall women's title of the extreme triathlon; South Africa's Conrad Stoltz won the men's title.

Fuller to play for Graceland

Kamehameha Schools' Aaron Fuller, who batted .571 in the state playoffs, will play for Graceland University in Iowa this fall. The son of former Hawaii baseball player and assistant coach Gary Fuller returned from the Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament (ages 16-18) in Galt, Calif., where he batted .538.
