New releases by Hawaii authors, reviewed by Burl Burlingame:
Hawai'i's Russian Adventure -- A New Look at Old History by Peter R. Mills (University of Hawaii Press, $39)The price will keep this fascinating volume out of reach of the easily fascinated, but for those interested in Hawaii's early interactions with the outside world, Mills' essay-like work is interesting reading. Russia's attempts to prise a toehold in Hawaii is best understood in the light of Kauai's then-recent accession into Kamehameha's pan-island empire, and chief Kaumuali'i's efforts to scramble the forced unification.
Pray For a Rainbow by Wendy Arvella, illustrated by Wayne Takazono (Island Heritage, $8.99)Local keiki Kimo moves to New York and misses Hawaii, but earns a new friend, a cancer victim named Emily. They use the medium of art to feel better about their lives. Both cute and somber.
