Miyajima comes up short


Shayna Miyajima's run at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship ended in the third round yesterday, with a 4 and 2 loss to Mollie Frankhauser.

Miyajima, a Baldwin High School graduate who is now a junior at San Diego State, was seeded 107th out of 150 competitors. She beat the 29th and 83rd seeds Wednesday.

Yesterday, Miyajima fell behind early against Frankhauser, of Columubs, Ohio, and never recovered.

Wilsons still in hunt: Hilo's Amanda and Gabriel Wilson tee off early today in the final round of the Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic National Finals in Houston, after yesterday's third round was wiped out because of bad weather.

Amanda Wilson is in second place, nine shots behind Nevada's Christine Fernandez. She shot consecutive rounds of 74 for a 148 total. Gabriel Wilson starts the day 16 strokes behind Kevin Silva of Massachusetts, after rounds of 75 and 80.

Iolani unbeaten at elite wrestling camp

Brent Kakesako and Owen Yonehara were undefeated and helped the Iolani wrestling team finish first at the John Smith Sierra Wrestling Team Camp at Reno, Nev., last week.

The Raiders went 11-0 and outscored their opponents 466-117 to win the team title.

Iolani competed against teams from California, Nevada, Idaho, Oregon, Colorado, Montana, and Arizona.

Hawaii opens with win at Legion tournament

Ryan Basco doubled in two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as Hawaii beat California 10-5 in the first game of the American Legion Region 8 tournament at Las Vegas, Nev., yesterday.

Basco put his team in position to win by pitching eight innings and giving up only four runs. Hawaii scored five in the eighth then handed the ball to Harrison Kuroda to shut out California in the ninth.

Hawaii plays Utah today in the second game.

Hoe to play basketball for NAIA Div. II school

Chris Hoe, the ILH's fourth-leading scorer for Mid-Pacific Institute last year, has accepted an athletic scholarship to attend NAIA Div. II Concordia University in Portland, Ore.

Hoe averaged 13.1 points a game for the Owls.

Tanoue takes Legion sporter division

Michael Tanoue of Honolulu scored 2,248 points out of a possible 2,509 to take first place in the sporter division of the American Legion National Junior Air Rifle championships at Colorado Springs, Colo., yesterday.

Honolulu's Shannon Li was third.

Applications avaialable for Komen race

The Susan G, Komen Hawaii Race for the Cure is scheduled for Sept. 29 at Kapiolani Park.

The 5K race is to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer. Applications are available at www.raceforthecurehawaii.org.
