Lottery to be held
for annual City Lights

Star-Bulletin staff

The city will hold a lottery again this year to select private displays for the Honolulu City Lights show.

Nonprofit organizations may apply for the five exhibition locations on the grounds near Honolulu Hale.

Aug. 30 is the deadline for applications to be made to the Department of Customer Services. A Sept. 9 lottery will select five winners from the applicants.

The annual lottery was begun several years ago after a complaint was lodged about the religious content of a church display that was permitted for several years in the midst of the city's secular holiday exhibition.

Last year's displays represented three religious groups and two community organizations.
