Miyajima still standing

From staff and wire reports

SCARBOROUGH, N.Y. >> Wailuku's Shayna Miyajima, a junior at San Diego State, sweated through her first round of match play yesterday before blasting into the round of 16 with a rout of her second opponent in the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship.

Miyajima -- a 2000 Baldwin High School graduate who won the 1999 girls individual state championship -- beat Emma Duggleby of England 2 and 1 in her first match of the day at Sleepy Hollow Country Club. Miyajima rebounded from a three-hole deficit early on to get past the No. 29 seed Duggleby.

Miyajima, the 107th seed, followed that up with a 6 and 4 win over Minnesota's Jennifer Perri in the round of 32. Perri was seeded 83rd.

Miyajima meets Ohio's Mollie Frankhauser today for a berth in the quarterfinals.

Wilson second in Houston: The good news for Hilo's Amanda Wilson is that she holds sole possession of second place after two days of the Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic National Finals in Houston. The bad news is she trails leader Christine Fernandez of Nevada by nine shots.

Wilson fired a 74 for the second straight day, for a 148 total. Fernandez shot a 69 and leads the field with a 139.

On the boys side, Gabriel Wilson -- Amanda's older brother -- shot an 80 to drop into a tie for 44th place with a 155. His 75 in the first round was good for a tie for 26th place.

Kevin Silva of Massachusetts leads the boys with a 139.
