Hearings set on formal rules
for Hawaii archaeology

Star-Bulletin staff

State historic-preservation officials have drafted 10 new chapters to establish formal administrative rules for archaeological work in Hawaii, including the establishment of filing fees.

Public hearings on the rules, all starting at 6:30 p.m., are scheduled:

>> Tuesday in the Kauai County Council Chambers.

>> Wednesday at Yano Hall in Captain Cook on the Big Island.

>> Next Thursday at state conference rooms at 75 Aupuni St. in Hilo.

>> Aug. 26 at the county planning conference room in Wailuku.

>> Aug. 27 at the Mitchell Pauole Center on Molokai.

>> Aug. 28 at the Board of Land & Natural Resources Conference Room 132 at 1151 Punchbowl St. on Oahu.

>> Aug. 29 at the Senior Citizen Center on Lanai.

Division chief Don Hibbard said the draft includes the same interim rules that have been applied to the conduct and procedures followed by archaeologists.

But he said the draft also includes a schedule of filing fees for various reports -- a charge that has not been assessed in the past.

The fees range from $50 to $450 and are required for the filing of various reports with the state, including an archaeological data recovery report.

Information about proposed rules may be viewed at www.hawaii.gov/dlnr/hpd/draftrules.htm or by calling 808-692-8015.
