A 35-year-old convicted felon was charged with second-degree attempted murder Monday for allegedly running over a police officer's foot on Aug. 5 with a stolen car in Whitmore Village.

Ronald Lewis Medeiros was stopped for speeding on Whitmore Avenue at Uakanikoo Place and Uakanikoo Street by officer Edson Duncan, according to a police affidavit.

Medeiros presented his driver's license with his name on it to the officer.

Duncan then returned to his vehicle and ran a check on the license plate of the Nissan four-door sedan, and was informed it was a rental vehicle stolen on Aug. 5 at 10:35 a.m. from Keeaumoku Street.

Duncan returned to the car, told Medeiros he was under arrest for operating a stolen vehicle, ordered him out of the car and tried to handcuff him, the affidavit said.

Medeiros got back in the car and ran over the officer's right foot, according to the affidavit.

He abandoned the car at the end of a cul-de-sac, and Duncan pursued him on foot through the neighborhood.

Medeiros doubled back to the officer's subsidized police vehicle, a sport utility vehicle with a flashing blue light dome on its roof, then allegedly drove toward Duncan, the affidavit said.

With his 9 mm service pistol, the officer fired two rounds at Medeiros, the affidavit states, causing the SUV to strike a mailbox. Medeiros then drove from the scene.

Police issued an all-points bulletin and recovered the vehicle with a tip from an anonymous caller who reported the SUV with a flashing blue dome light parked at an apartment parking lot on Waipahu Street.

Duncan, a 34-year-old officer and an 11-year veteran, suffered foot and leg injuries and was treated and released at Queen's Medical Center.

After searching for the suspect with no success, police asked the public for help in locating Medeiros.

Police received a tip Monday that Medeiros was living on Palolo Avenue with a couple who drove a black SUV. After an investigation, police arrested Medeiros.

Medeiros was convicted in a 1999 second-degree robbery case and sentenced to five years' probation, according to court records.

He was found guilty on three misdemeanor charges, including abuse of a household member in 2001.
