Designer Mai-Scherelle
offers pattern-making classes

Hawaii's fashion designers ask for thousands of dollars for a single creation, but now one of them is putting design know-how into the hands of people who sew.

Mai-Scherelle, who specializes in formal and wedding gowns and dresses many of Hawaii's beauty queens for local and national pageants, will begin teaching classes in beginning and advanced pattern-making and fashion designs.

Students will attend six four-hour sessions, as follows:

>> Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or 6 to 10 p.m., beginning Aug. 27.

>> Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or 6 to 10 p.m., beginning Aug. 29.

>> Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 1 to 5 p.m., beginning Aug. 31.

Students will learn a "shortcut" method that the Vietnam-born, Paris-trained designer has perfected over 22 years in the fashion industry.

"Using this method, my patterns fit like a glove," she said. Last year, she was called to refit a vintage gown worn by Courtney Love to the premiere of "Pearl Harbor."

Tuition is $325, and arrangements can be made for those who cannot attend on the dates listed.

Classes take place in the Pan Am Building, 1600 Kapiolani Blvd., Suite 1230. Call 921-0084.

Macy's Ala Moana expands to plus sizes

Macy's Ala Moana is launching a department for plus-sized women with a modeling session, 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Macy Island Woman, a department within a department, will feature "island-inspired" designs from Leina'ala, Sidan and M.Mac.

Saturday's launch will include complimentary candies, coffee and cookies, plus prize giveaways and special gifts-with-purchase.

The event is taking place at the Ala Moana store only, but Macy Woman departments are also open at stores in Kahala Mall, Pearlridge Center, Kailua, Windward Mall and Kona.

NEW YORK TIMES
Tiaras made with glittery pipe cleaners are among those favored by a new generation of party girls.

Tiaras turning heads at clubs and parties

Once reserved for royalty, brides and debutantes, tiaras became a popular campy evening accessory in the early '90s for fringe celebrities such as Courtney Love. Now the glittery adornment has been adopted by a new generation.

At Ricky's Drugstore in New York, sales of tiaras ($9.99 to $19.99) have gone up sharply on weekends. "We definitely cater to club kids," said Dominick Costello, one of the store's owners.

Delusions of Grandeur in Richmond, Va., ships tiaras made with rhinestones, pearls and colorful pipe cleaners to mark occasions such as birthdays and promotions ($18 to $50). Call 804-741-4306.

At M&J Trim in Manhattan, customers can choose among 50 styles of crystal-encrusted tiaras ($10 to $100). "Tiaras are very hot," said a co-owner, David Cohen. "People like them because they're sparkly and they make you feel like a princess."

Or like a fashion queen: Betsey Johnson scooped up 25 for models to wear in her next show.
