DJ QBert cuts it up
at Players Aiea

THOSE WHO PRAY at the temple of turntablism are thanking their lucky stars this week. In this space on Tuesday I told you about the Kid Koala concert tonight at Wave Waikiki, but did DJ QBert catch you sleeping on Monday? Only true heads were at Players Aiea when the scratchmaster from San Francisco (now living here) held court with the Architechs crew.

Four turntables were in use Monday, as DJ XL and Delve.one.der got things jumping, along with DJ Zita from Sisters in Sound. A film crew from Thud Rumble was on hand, there to film the action for an upcoming "Turntable TV" video release ...

SO MUCH FOR Wyclef Jean making it out to paradise. This Saturday's Kool Mixx DJ battle at World Cafe will still be hosted by the one and only Doug E. Fresh, but now the Black Eyed Peas are scheduled to appear at the free concert instead of the former Fugee. Local DJs signed up for the event include Compozed, Deception, Skid and A-2-Z. Things start at 6 p.m. on Saturday, and remember that it's absolutely free to check out ...

AS SUMMER STARTS to wind down, the folks at Pipeline Cafe have decided to jump-start their Friday nights. Rick Rock's Foreplay Fridaze becomes 18-and-over starting this week, with Heinekens going for $3 and Sex on the Beach for just $2. Don't forget about DJs Wu-Chang and Taktik ripping up the decks either ...

STARTING TOMORROW and continuing all weekend, the 2002 Made in Hawaii Festival is a great opportunity for residents to try new products made by local companies. This year, along with the various products available for sale, the festival will also feature live music on all three days. On Friday it'll be Jerry Santos, Ernie Cruz Jr., Ku'uipo Kumukahi, O'Brian Eselu and Darren Benitez performing, starting at noon. Saturday's lineup includes Frank DeLima, Aunty Genoa Keawe, Jay Larrin, Maunalua and Nohelani Cypriano. And on Sunday, Ale'a, Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom and Sean Na'auao will take to the stage. Entertainment starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission to the Made in Hawaii Festival is $2; call 533-1292 for more info ...

ALSO ON SUNDAY, check out Brew Moon in Ward Centre for the third anniversary of "Dark Side of the Moon." The Stone Groove Family's G-Dog will be there starting at 10 p.m., spinning hip-hop, funk and soul ...
