awareness and raise funds, too

Awareness Foundation, a domestic violence prevention nonprofit agency, has chosen the plumeria as its symbol to help promote the agency and its mission.

Awareness Foundation President Martha Ross said, "The plumeria is a common flower that quickly conveys the idea that aloha can be a solution to a common problem."

Public service announcements for the foundation, scheduled to air on radio and television will begin tomorrow. The announcements will highlight the importance of the plumeria in the foundation's mission.

Ross said she hopes the campaign will increase awareness of domestic abuse and help raise funds to prevent it.

The all-volunteer foundation receives about $60,000 to $70,000 a year. That money is allocated to a number of abuse prevention organizations on the island.

To raise money for the foundation, plumeria pins with messages will be sold in selected Hawaii stores for $5.

For more information on the foundation or to volunteer, call Ross at 381-8563.
